School Phobia and the Holidays
For a child with a fear of school, the holidays provide a wonderful, long- awaited escape from school anxiety. This child probably really needs a break. However, it is during the time off of the holiday break that a budding school anxiety or school phobia often grows into a full scale problem. It seems that the complete absence of the much-feared school makes the dreaded return even more frightening than it had been before the holiday break.

Early professional help can make a difference .
If parents suspect that a school phobia is brewing, then now is the time to get professional help, before the school bus returns. Over the years, I have found that school phobias have never caused permanent damage. Having said that, a school phobia can be a hair-pulling and dramatic crisis. Before it is fixed, teachers, administrators and families often get to know each other far more closely than they had anticipated. When in doubt, consider an ounce of prevention.
